Description
Michelle Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle / Catwoman: Formerly a quiet and shy secretary for Max Shreck, Selina transforms into Catwoman after Shreck tries to kill her. She becomes a romantic interest for Bruce Wayne and a deadly adversary for Batman. Batman Returns is a 1992 American superhero fantasy film produced and directed by Tim Burton, based upon the Batman character appearing in magazines published by DC Comics. It is the second installment of Warner Bros.’ initial Batman film series, with Michael Keaton reprising the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film introduces the characters of Max Shreck (Christopher Walken), a business tycoon who teams up with the Penguin (Danny DeVito) to take over Gotham City, as well as the character of Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer). While innocently pulling relevant documents, Selina accesses Shreck’s protected files, uncovering compromising information, revealing that the plant will drain Gotham’s power supply. Realizing Selina knows too much, Shreck pushes her out of a window, leaving her for dead on the ground many stories below. Selina survives the fall after being revived by alley cats. She returns to her apartment, then suffers a psychotic break and reinvents herself as Catwoman, a catsuit-clad burglar dedicated to getting revenge on her boss. Pfeiffer took the role of Catwoman (Selina Kyle) in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns (1992) opposite Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito. For the role of Catwoman, she trained in martial arts and kickboxing. One co-star stated that “Michelle had four stunt doubles – but she did all her own whippin’.” Peter Travers of Rolling Stone praised her for giving the “feminist avenger a tough core of intelligence and wit” and called her a “classic dazzler.” Premiere retrospectively lauded her performance: “Arguably the outstanding villain of the Tim Burton era, Michelle Pfeiffer’s deadly kitten with a whip brought sex to the normally neutered franchise. Her stitched-together, black patent leather costume, based on a sketch of Burton’s, remains the character’s most iconic look. And Michelle Pfeiffer overcomes Batman Returns’ heavy-handed feminist dialogue to deliver a growling, fierce performance.” The movie met a big box office success, grossing over $266 million worldwide (equivalent to $442.5 million).
