Dirty deeds done dirt cheap. What’s the title of this review refer to? The dirtiness of many of the characters in this book, and they’re nasty.
I hate to call this an Avengers book because the Avengers are not a wet-ops operation and that is what this drafted team is: wet-ops. Nasty ‘ol Nick Fury recruits the Punisher against his will and puts him in a partiotic, Cappish Stark suit and sends him out along with the Black Widow, Hawkeye, War Machine, and a bloke by the name of Tyrone Cash who is supposed to be “the first Hulk” to defend the vice president of the good ‘ol U.S. of A.
But, as written by Millar, you know that nobody and nothing is “good”. That’s all a deceit and he’s going to uncover it for us. To that end this story turns into a similar tale of that of “The Crow” (if anyone remembers that comic). A man and his wife are newlywed and off on an adventure when they are apprehended by some dudes and slain as a sacrifice to that other dirty ‘ol Nic. But that demonic ne’er-do-well double crosses everyone and turns the sacrificial lamb into the Ghost Rider who rides after and kills off his murderers in different ways, like in the movie “Seven”. You guessed it, the Veep was one of the dudes who sacrificed the couple and got to where he is by way of Scratch himself, double-dealing him all the way. The Avengers fail to protect and actually get their hindsides kicked pretty hard by flaming skullface and the Punisher, who has a chance to do him in, lets him live. After all, these dudes are two of a kind.
No one comes away untouched or unscathed (the Black Widow, in particular, gives us one nasty piece of info on her ex-husband Fury). The book is dirty and gritty and grimy and violent and misogynistic (the characters are). The pencils and inks by Leinil Yu and Gerry Alanguilan are very suited to this book as they are seemingly purposefully imperfect and hyperkinetic in style. I did not like Yu’s art when I was first exposed to it in the “Secret Invasion” storylines but it has grown on me and here it is very good. As with much of what I’ve ended up reading in the Ultimates’ line of comics this book is parental advisory and for good reasons.
