WALKING DEAD #112 (IMAGE COMICS) Carl and Andrea are faced with the unthinkable. This chapter builds on the tension from last month as Negan makes an unexpected return to the community even as Rick and friends are out plotting his downfall. The two sides come together and resume butting heads, building ever closer to the inevitable showdown we’ve been waiting for. What made this issue stand out is just how close to the tipping point the conflict moves. Negan goes through his usual half-charming/half-scary routine in his latest conversation with Rick. Despite having just gutted a man in the street for annoying him, Negan retains that charismatic quality that makes him such a fun villain. And Kirkman even makes a point of dropping Negan’s excessive profanity for a time, which is a nice change of pace in itself. Conversely, there’s a strong appeal in seeing Rick say “enough’s enough” and stand up to Negan for the first time. It’s fun to watch as their latest encounter shifts from polite discourse to open hostilities over the course of a dozen pages. On the visual side of things, Charlie Adlard is able to render a bit of zombie-slaying action in addition to the up close and personal standoff between the two leaders, leading to a more visually diverse issue than we’ve seen of late.
