Description

Frederick Charles “Freddy” Krueger is a fictional character and the primary antagonist of the A Nightmare on Elm Street film series. He appears in Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) as a disfigured serial killer who uses a glove armed with razors to kill his victims in their dreams, causing their deaths in the waking world as well. However, whenever he is put into the real world, he has normal human vulnerability. Krueger was created by Wes Craven, and had been consistently portrayed by Robert Englund since his first appearance. Freddy is a vengeful spirit who attacks his victims from within their dreams. He is commonly identified by his burned, disfigured face, red-and-dark-green striped sweater, brown fedora, and trademark metal-clawed brown leather glove on his right hand. Robert Englund has said many times that he feels the character represents neglect, particularly that suffered by children. The character also more broadly represents subconscious fears. In New Nightmare, Freddy Krueger was portrayed closer to what Craven had imagined; darker and less comical. To correspond with this, the make-up and outfit of the character was different, with one of the most prominent differences being that he now wears a long, black trenchcoat. This image of Freddy is NOT from 1994’s Wes Craven’s New Nightmare. This image is from a promotional photo shoot done in 1987 during the filming of A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. While in New Nightmare, Freddy wore a black wool trenchcoat(in some shots it actually appeared to be leather), in this image the trenchcoat is grey tweed. Also, the original 1987 UK quad poster for Dream Warriors features a different image from this same photo shoot.
