Wolverine was born with bone claws as part of his mutation. The adamantium was not added until later by the Weapon X program. It was not discovered until Magneto ripped the adamantium laced skeleton from his body, revealing natural claws. Wolverine’s healing factor grew stronger without having to compensate for the adamantium. Later, Apocalypse gave Wolverine the adamantium back when Logan agreed to become one of his Horsemen.
