EXTINCTION PARADE #1 (AVATAR PRESS INC) The best-selling Zombie writer in history finally unleashes an all-new epic for comics! Be ready for the summer’s biggest comic event as millions of zombie fans come looking for with the first chapter of Max Brooks’ Extinction Parade! One of the founders of the zombie renaissance, Max Brooks has sold millions of books in dozens of languages. His first book The Zombie Survival Guide not only singlehandedly jump-started the zombie prep subculture, it’s graphic novel companion Recorded Attacks debuted as #1 on the New Times Bestseller list. His second book World War Z (already a multi-million copy NYT bestseller in its own right) has been adapted by Brad Pitt into what is sure to be one of the biggest blockbuster movies of 2013. Max Brooks takes the zombie genre to a whole new level with his new comic series Extinction Parade featuring stunningly rendered art by super-star Raulo (Crossed, Captain Swing) Caceres. Building on the seed of his hit 2010 short story, Brooks has crafted a truly epic series spanning over 250 pages. Not only does Extinction Parade’s multilayered depth and meticulously researched detail raise it to the standard of his previous work, it also introduces fans to an entirely new, fresh and terrifying subgenre: Vampires Vs Zombies. As humans wage their loosing fight versus the hoards of the subdead, a frightening realization sets in with the secretive Vampire race: our food is dying off. This is the story of Vampires’ decent into all-out war with the mindless hungry hordes of the zombie outbreak as humanity tries to survive them all. Three species in mortal conflict. This is how a species dies. It’s all-out supernatural war this June as vampires take on zombies in Avatar Press’ “The Extinction Parade” from Max Brooks, the first creator-owned miniseries from the author of “World War Z,” featuring art by “Crossed: Badlands” artist Raulo Caceres. Based on one of Brooks’ short stories, “The Extinction Parade” takes place in a zombie-infested world where vampires have come out of the shadows to devour the panic-stricken humans en masse. Max, what’s “The Extinction Parade” about? Max Brooks: You might call it “An Inconvenient Truth” for vampires, although I’m not really sure if the metaphor is entirely accurate. The story deals with a zombie plague told through the eyes of vampires. Initially, the bloodsuckers welcome the zombie rise because the ensuing chaos allows them to kill without fear of repercussions. Only later do they realize that the ‘subdead’ ghouls, who don’t even notice the vampires, are slowly eating away at both species’ only food source. In the midst of their bloody frenzy, they realize, “Hey, wait a minute — what are we going to live on when the humans are all gone?” What inspired “The Extinction Parade?” What interests me about zombies is our reaction to them. I’m constantly fascinated by how the human heart-mind-body-spirit reacts to crisis. It intrigues me on both the micro and macro level. With “EP,” I thought I’d explore how another species might react, a species that supposedly would have incredibly advantages over the weaker humans they feed off of. I wanted to explore the supposed pitfalls of all these privileges and how they only come to light during a crisis. How closely does the comic follow your original short story? The comic is similar to the short story. I’ve changed a few of the characters; I’ve changed a few of the scenes. Most importantly, I’ve gone deeper, much deeper, than in the short story. I tried to dig into the bottom of vampire psychology, as well as pull out the long, slow descent into Armageddon. I wanted to illustrate each individual vampire shortcoming and how they try to correct them. As far as research, scope and detail, the comic series will be light years beyond the story. Max Brooks’ Extinction Parade Optioned by Legendary TV! Writer of World War Z and The Zombie Survival Guide lines up another story for on-screen adaptation. APRIL 24, 2014. Max Brooks has penned more than a few zombie stories, including World War Z and The Zombie Survival Guide. Now, Deadline reports that Legendary TV has optioned yet another Brooks zombie story, the comic series The Extinction Parade, for development as a television series. They’re bringing Brooks in to help develop the project as well as write the series’ pilot episode. The horror series, published by Avatar Press, is set in a world where the human population is dwindling because of a zombie plague. While humanity diminishes, the vampires in the world are starving and they decide to fight back and try to get rid of the zombies. So instead of just zombies, it’s vampires vs. zombies. Brooks only took the idea to Legendary, stating, ““I only brought the idea to one company, Legendary, because they do the kind of quality work of which any writer would be proud”.
