Description
Robotech: The Movie, also called Robotech: The Untold Story, is a 1986 American-Japanese science fiction animated film based on the Robotech TV series and Robotech franchise created by Harmony Gold USA. The 1986 theatrical film used footage from part one of Megazone 23 spliced with The Southern Cross and had only a tenuous link to the television series.
Rick Hunter, voiced by veteran voice actor Tony Oliver, is one of the fictional characters in the Robotech anime television series. He begins the series as a naive and headstrong nineteen-year-old civilian pilot, having flown for his father “Pops” Hunter’s world-class flying circus. Yet by the end of the series, he matures into a well-respected, experienced, and visionary military commander.
Rick originally shares his father’s pacifist view of war, until the alien race known as the Zentraedi attack the Earth. Rick then spends the series struggling to reconcile his personal feelings with the realities of war, and the need to confront the incredible alien threat.
Dark Horizons reports that Spider-Man himself, Tobey Maguire is producing “Robotech” for Warner Bros. Warner hopes that Robotech will, of course, become a tent pole franchise.
The original Robotech was 3 re-dubbed and edited anime that were combine into a multi-generational story. The first part, “The Macross Saga” is presumably what will be developed for the feature. “Macross” centers on humanity defending itself with alien technology from an Alien Invasion.
Warner Bros. is in negotiations to have Nic Mathieu to direct the Robotech movie. Mathieu has, so far, only directed CGI-heavy commercials, but I guess that would seemingly make him a perfect fit for this film.
The Robotech film already has a long line of producers – Tobey Maguire, Akiva Goldman, Matthew Plouffe, Joby Harold, and Tory Tunnell – but Nic Mathieu is the first director signed on to the project.
The Robotech anime, which aired in North America in the 80s, is actually a spliced dub of three Japanese mecha shows: The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA. The shows were spliced together to raise the episode count, and because of edits for content.
