Guardians no more?
Following the Black Vortex, the Guardians have come into conflict with one another more and more.
With rifts forming between them, will their friendship and history be enough to hold the team together?

The Black Vortex saga is over, and Peter Quill has to face his latest challenge: politician?

Bendis is a master of writing strong characters and the Guardians are at their best when they are put in awkward situations befitting their awkward team. Peter Quill is facing two major commitments that are atypical for him, an engagement with Kitty Pryde and ruling the Spartax Empire. I’m not sure which has him more off his game, but Bendis writes both situations well. He is obviously comfortable with all these characters, as their voices are fantastic. Kitty is a great addition to the mix, and she makes sense with this group. Her banter with Peter is great, and the two share some sweet moments. I actually buy them as a couple, which is better than I can say for most comic book couples. The situation post-Black Vortex is interesting for this team, and in the interest of avoiding spoilers, I’ll just say there is a toll on the group. How this will all shake out after Secret Wars will be very interesting, and Bendis has the greatest group of misfits in the galaxy in an interesting pickle at the end of the issue.

Valerio Schiti….holy crap. This man’s work is amazing, and I will say without a moment’s hesitation that this guy is one of the five best superhero artists in comics. His work is exceptional, and this issue features some fantastic cosmic action. Schiti’s take on Venom in particular is awesome, and the character just…works now. Flash Thompson is a straight up hero now, and he’s a legit member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Schiti captures the personality of each character well, and even with the huge action in this issue, all the emotional aspects are executed properly as well. Schiti is a top flight talent and Guardians #27 is one of the best looking comics you’ll see this month.

Guardians of the Galaxy #27 is a rock solid comic featuring some great character work and astounding artwork. The wait until after Secret Wars will be hard, but I’m looking forward to what Bendis and Schiti have in store for my favourite misfits in the new Marvel U.
