Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created for HBO by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels, the first of which is titled A Game of Thrones. The episodes are mainly written by Benioff and Weiss, who are the executive producers alongside Martin, who writes one episode per season. Filmed in a Belfast studio and on location elsewhere in Northern Ireland, Malta, Scotland, Croatia, Iceland, the United States and Morocco, it premiered on HBO in the United States on April 17, 2011. Two days after the fourth season premiered in April 2014, HBO renewed Game of Thrones for a fifth and sixth season. The series, set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos at the end of a decade-long summer, interweaves several plot lines. The first follows the members of several noble houses in a civil war for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms; the second covers the rising threat of the impending winter and the mythical creatures of the North; the third chronicles the attempts of the exiled last scion of the realm’s deposed dynasty to reclaim the throne. Through its morally ambiguous characters, the series explores issues of social hierarchy, religion, loyalty, corruption, civil war, crime, and punishment. Game of Thrones has attracted record numbers of viewers on HBO and obtained an exceptionally broad and active international fan base. It received widespread acclaim by critics, although its frequent use of nudity, violence and sexual violence has attracted criticism. The series has won numerous awards and nominations, including a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Drama Series for its first four seasons, a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Television Series – Drama, a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation in both Long Form and Short Form, and a Peabody Award. Among the ensemble cast, Peter Dinklage won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film for his role as Tyrion Lannister.
Brienne of Tarth is a fictional character in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels. She is a prominent point of view character in the fourth novel, A Feast for Crows, and a main character in the television adaptation. Brienne is the only daughter of Lord Selwyn Tarth, lord of Evenfall Hall, based on the island of Tarth. Her mother died when she was young. She had a single older brother, Galladon, who drowned when she was eight, and two younger sisters, both of whom died in infancy. Her father tried to find Brienne a suitor to wed; however, this was not easy, owing to Brienne’s resistance and her ungainly appearance, and several offers were unsuccessful. Her last offer was from Ser Humfrey Wagstaff who wanted Brienne to become more feminine after their wedding, Brienne stated she would acquiesce if he could beat her in combat. They fought and Brienne was the victor, and so their betrothal never came to fruition. At one point in her history, Brienne met Renly Baratheon when he visited her island on a tour. He treated Brienne with courtesy and respect and she subsequently fell in love with him. In the books, Brienne is described as unfeminine in appearance, and is considered unattractive. She is very tall, muscular, flat-chested and ungainly, with straw-colored hair and broad, coarse features that are covered in freckles. Her teeth are prominent and crooked, her mouth is wide, her lips are swollen, and her nose has been broken more than once. However, her large blue eyes are described as beautiful. When former model Gwendoline Christie, considered a beautiful woman, was cast in the role in the TV series, it was reported that some fans thought her too pretty. Charlie Harwood of HBOwatch describes Brienne as “loyal, stubborn, headstrong, and judgmental. Despite the repeated insults from knights, who mockingly call her “Brienne the Beauty”, she holds a simple idea of knighthood, believing that knights should be chivalrous and always honor their vows.” In an Interview for SFX magazine, Gwendoline Christie described her as an outsider who has had to develop “outer strength that often matches or supersedes that of any man in order to be treated with equality. She doesn’t want to get married…yet she’s internally romantic…she has an overriding sense of honour and what is right, and that’s what makes her such a brilliant character to play: that her outer is so stable and masculine, but inside she’s so fragile”.
Gwendoline Christie is a British actress. She is best known for portraying the warrior Brienne of Tarth in the HBO fantasy-drama series Game of Thrones and Lexi in the science fantasy series Wizards vs Aliens. In film, Christie started with minor roles in the Terry Gilliam films The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and The Zero Theorem, and is set to appear as Commander Lyme in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and Part 2, and in the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII. In July 2011, Christie was cast as the warrior Brienne of Tarth in the second season of HBO’s fantasy TV series Game of Thrones. Her character—an unusually tall, muscular, and plain-looking woman—is a favourite among many readers of the novels, and Christie had been proposed for the role on fan websites long before auditions took place. Christie said that she could draw on her own experiences of having been bullied for her height and androgynous looks to play the part of Brienne, a role that she was passionate to obtain after reading the A Song of Ice and Fire novels which the show adapts. To prepare even for the auditions, she started wearing unisex clothing to help her get into her character’s more masculine mindset, and took up an intensive training regime, gaining over a stone (6.4 kg, 14 lb) of muscle mass. According to series co-writer and -producer George R.R. Martin, she obtained the role practically without debate after an arresting audition at which she appeared already made up and costumed as Brienne. After being cast in the role, she prepared for it by taking horsemanship, sword-fighting, and stagefighting lessons. Her debut in the second season’s third episode on 15 April 2012 was well received by critics. Nina Shen Rastogi praised her “eloquent and economical physical performance”, noting that her walk, stance, and mien effectively conveyed Brienne’s single-minded devotion to her self-given quest to become a knight and to her king Renly. For her role as Brienne, Christie was nominated for the 2013 Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress.
