Cinderella (Walt Disney’s Masterpiece) [VHS]
Ilene Woods (Actor), James MacDonald (Actor), Clyde Geronimi (Director), Rated: G (General Audience) Format: VHS Tape

Disney’s adaptation of the beloved fairy tale became a classic in its own right, thanks to some memorable tunes (including “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes,” “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo,” and the title song) and some endearingly cute comic relief. We all know the story–the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply won’t have it, this uppity Cinderella thinking she’s going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart, but perseverance, animal buddies, and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right. There are a few striking sequences of pure animation–for example, Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air–and the design is rich and evocative throughout. It’s a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business, particularly Cinderella’s rodent pals (dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine) and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer. There’s also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke. It’s a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today, which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying.

This version of CINDERELLA is the original Walt Disney animated classic based on Charles Perrault’s 17th-century fable about a poor stepdaughter transformed into a vision of beauty and sent to the royal ball by her Fairy Godmother to meet her Prince Charming and live happily ever after. Academy Award Nominations: Best Sound Recording, Best Scoring of a Musical Picture, Best Song (“Bibbidy-Bobbidi-Boo”).

Cinderella is a delightful tale that will enchant both children and adults alike. This classic story is brought to life in wonderful Disney fashion, with beautiful music, colorful animation, and, of course, animals who can talk. Every young girl’s fantasy is lived out through the humble Cinderella, whose hard work pays off when she is paid a visit by her fairy godmother on the night of the ball, when Cinderella falls in love with and marries Prince Charming, despite the ill wishes of her stepfamily. The humorous addition of Cinderella’s “friends,” the mice, birds, and household pets whom she so sweetly adores, add to the overall effect of the film, which is one of magic and make-believe, hope and wonder.

The film received three Academy Award nominations for Best Sound (C. O. Slyfield) lost to All About Eve, Best Original Score (Oliver Wallace and Paul J. Smith) lost to Annie Get Your Gun and Best Song for “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo” (Mack David, Jerry Livingston, and Al Hoffman) lost to Captain Carey, U.S.A.. At the 1st Berlin International Film Festival it won the Golden Bear (Music Film) award and the Big Bronze Plate award.

In June 2008, the American Film Institute revealed its “10 Top 10″— the best ten films in ten “classic” American film genres—after polling over 1,500 people from the creative community. Cinderella was acknowledged as the 9th greatest film in the animation genre.
