A Kid in King Arthur’s Court
Joss Ackland (Actor), Kate Winslet (Actor), Elemer Ragalyi (Director), Michael Gottlieb (Director) Rated: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested) Format: VHS

Faith in oneself is crucial but often difficult to develop. Calvin Fuller (Thomas Ian Nicholas), a misfit from the 20th-century “Knights” baseball team, lacks self-confidence. Imagine his alarm when he’s sucked into the Middle Ages to answer the wizard Merlin’s (Ron Moody) plea for a “Knight” to save King Arthur and Camelot from the scheming Lord Belasco (Art Malik). Intense culture shock befalls all involved as a bewildered Calvin dines on pig snouts and learns to lance while King Arthur (Joss Ackland) and his court members are confounded by 20th-century inventions like rock & roll and roller-blading. Eventually, Calvin’s interactions with the king and his court spark a journey of personal growth that leads to love and a newfound confidence that enables him to help King Arthur, Princesses Katey (Paloma Baeza) and Sarah (Kate Winslet), and Camelot as a whole. Will Calvin’s confidence accompany him back to the 20th-century? Loosely based on Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.

Return to those days of old when knights were bold and baseball ruled the land. Baseball? It’s Camelot meets the sandlot in Disney’s A KID IN KING ARTHUR’S COURT, the hilarious update of Mark Twain’s timeless “A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur’s Court.” To 14-year-old little leaguer Calvin Fuller, life is like one big strikeout when he lets his team down. Then an earthquake sends him through a magical time rift, and he finds himself in King Arthur’s court. But all is not well with the realm. An aged King Arthur is in danger of losing control to the evil Lord Belasco, and now it’s up to Calvin to save the kingdom. But before he can find a way to vanquish Belasco, he must first find a way to conquer his own fears. Now you can own Disney’s marvelous mixture of medieval myth and modern mirth that will have the whole family cheering!|An earthquake occurs during a Little League game in Southern California, and 14-year-old Calvin Fuller, playing for a team known as the Knights, falls through a crack in the earth and is inexplicably thrust back in time to the mythical medieval kingdom of Camelot and court of the legendary King Arthur. Calvin discovers he has been summoned to the twelfth century by Merlin to help restore Arthur’s fading glory and to prevent the realm from falling into the clutches of the sinister Lord Belasco. Calvin must find the courage to face Belasco and prove to himself he has what it takes to be a worthy knight. Producer Robert Levy got the idea for the movie one night after reading Mark Twain’s “A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur’s Court” to his son. “I used to paraphrase the classics when I told bedtime stories, and many times I’d make my son the hero.” To gain an authentic look, the producers decided to film in and around Budapest, Hungary. They found a medieval castle and village set being used by a BBC television series that was on hiatus for the season. With a little redressing and redesigning, the set was just right. The production was truly international for a final scene was filmed in England, the music was scored in Prague, and the final sound mix was done in Australia.|Ron Moody, who plays Merlin, played the same role for Disney 16 years earlier in the film UNIDENTIFIED FLYING ODDBALL.

No matter how many times I watch this movie, or the older I get, I am still in love with it! Being a fan of the time of King Arthur, and time travel without the use of science fiction novel tactics, this movie was a thrill for me to watch!

The lead character, Calvin, is a less than popular guy back in his home town of Receda, California. When he is suddenly thrown through time with the help of Merlin, he finds himself in a completely different world. Although the plot doesn’t exactly follow any of the stories of King Arthur (i.e. King Aurthur and Guinevere never had any kids, obviously. She ran away w/ Lancelot) but it has the romantic appeal of the time period, and Calvin’s friendships with the king and his youngest daughter, Princess Catherine are wonderful! As it goes on, his character flaws are sraightened out and he becomes a stronger person, faced with many tasks most persons never endure. The final scene’s tie it all together until he finally goes home, and realizes he can be the person he aspires to.

The film is absolutely wonderful with the adventure, romance, and humor tying togther to make a memorable occassion. I strongly suggest A Kid in King Arthur’s Court to anyone who wants a great time, a laugh and a smile!

Trimark later released a sequel, A Kid in Aladdin’s Palace, in 1998, but without Disney’s involvement.
