Description
Black Adam is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Produced by New Line Cinema, DC Films, Seven Bucks Productions, and FlynnPictureCo., and set for distribution by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is intended to be a spin-off from Shazam! (2019) and the eleventh film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a screenplay by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani, the film stars Dwayne Johnson as Teth-Adam / Black Adam alongside Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, Sarah Shahi, Quintessa Swindell, and Pierce Brosnan.
Johnson was attached to Shazam! early in development, and confirmed that he would portray the villain Black Adam in September 2014. The producers decided to give the character his own film in January 2017, and Sztykiel was hired that October. Collet-Serra joined in June 2019 for a planned release date of December 2021, but this timeline was delayed by the pandemic. Additional casting took place over the next year, including for members of the Justice Society of America (JSA), and the script was re-written by Haines and Noshirvani. Filming took place from April to August 2021 in Atlanta, Georgia, and also Los Angeles.
Black Adam is scheduled to be released in the United States on October 21, 2022.
Black Adam is referenced in Shazam!. When talking to the young Billy Batson, the wizard Shazam explains that he chose a champion years ago that unleashed the Seven Deadly Sins on Earth, erasing entire civilizations, and this was what made him realize he had to choose a champion wisely next time. He is referring to Black Adam. A magic-conjured hologram of Black Adam is briefly shown during the scene. The character was originally set to appear in the film before it was decided to give him his own film in order to not interfere with the narrative of Shazam!.
Dwayne Johnson will portray the character of Black Adam in the upcoming 2022 film Black Adam, which is considered both a spinoff and a prequel of the 2019 Shazam! movie, set in the DC Extended Universe In October 2017, Adam Sztykiel had been tapped to write the screenplay. In June 2019, Jaume Collet-Serra was announced as director for the film. Johnson announced on his Twitter account that Larry Sher will be the film’s cinematographer. The film was initially set to be released on December 22, 2021, with principal photography initially scheduled to begin in July 2020. However, due to the pandemic, filming has since been delayed to April 2021 and its release being pushed back to July 29, 2022. The film will also introduce the Justice Society of America, with Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate. It was revealed that Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani had written a new draft of the screenplay and that Sarah Shahi had been cast as Isis and Marwan Kenzari had been cast in an undisclosed role. Fady Elsayed was originally cast in the film, but due to the virus his role had to be recast.
