Fear Itself: Avengers Academy [Paperback] Christos Gage (Author), Sean Chen (Illustrator), Tom Raney (Illustrator), Andrea Divito (Illustrator). Near mint, 1st print. The Avengers Academy faces Fear Itself! The future looks bleak for the Academy when a battle with Dr. Octopus and his Sinister Six leaves two students hospitalized, and an encounter with another of Norman Osborn’s former protégés leads the troubled teens to question the objectives of their superhero studies. Then, with morale at an all-time low, the students are put to the ultimate test when they’re deployed amid the terror and chaos of war with the Serpent’s army and divinely possessed, hammer-wielding versions of Titania and the Absorbing Man! Not enough people read this series. It has some of the strongest new Marvel characters in years, while featuring some of my long time personal favorites, such as Hank Pym, Tigra, and Quicksilver. If you’re not a fan of the Fear Itself books don’t let that dissuade you. Even though it’s a part of the Fear Itself story arc, it can easily stand alone, focusing more on the relationships of the Avengers Academy students. That being said you should read the previous two volumes of Avengers Academy before reading this one. The writing is top notch as always and the art is great. Avenger Academy 14.1 is an excellent mini story that poses the question “why are we fighting psychos in their underwear when our powers can help fix the world?” As with any good writing this issue is not simply black and white. I was very happy to see this story become more relevant in laters issues as well. The main story arc deals with Absorbing Man and Titania all juiced up on their cosmic hammer power, due to the events of Fear Itself. Since the whole country is under attack, the avengers are spread thin and need the Avengers Academy to help with crowd control. This leads to them having to take on two, usually B-level villains, but now due to their new power they’re a serious threat. This leads to a showdown that threatens all of “pym space” with his dimensional door technology being comprised. Really enjoyable action in this book, as well as some great character development. It was nice to see that by the end of this story arc the Avengers Academy are going in a slightly new direction, as are some of it’s individual students and teachers. If you love Marvel comics I can’t imagine you not liking this series, can’t wait for the next one. COLLECTING: AVENGERS ACADEMY 14, 14.1, 15-20. Paperback: 176 pages.
